Is There a Penalty for Not Having Health Insurance?

It’s important to have health insurance for you and your family. If not, you must pay a penalty to the government. In 2015, the penalty for not having health insurance is $325 per adult and $162.50 per child (up $975 for a family) or 2% of your taxable income – whichever is more. In 2016, the penalty increases to $695 per adult and $347.50 per child (with a family maximum of $2,085), or 2.5% of your annual household income.

Fortunately, Stephen W. Herbert & Company can locate a plan that fits your needs and your budget. Depend on our authorized and licensed insurance agents to walk you through the selection process if you need personalized assistance in choosing a plan.

What is the Health Insurance Marketplace?

Healthcare.gov is the Health Insurance Marketplace (Exchange) where people without coverage find information about health insurance options, as well as purchase medical insurance. It’s a place where you can compare health insurance plans, get answers to questions about insurance, find out if you are eligible for tax credits for insurance, and much more.

Do I Qualify for Special Enrollment?

Did you miss open enrollment? If you qualify, you may be allowed to get insurance outside of the designated period. A special enrollment period permits people to get coverage under certain provisions, such as getting married, having a child, or other life events. In addition, if you lose your medical coverage, you could also qualify for marketplace coverage. Even if you don’t qualify during the special enrollment period, you can still obtain short-term insurance coverage. Call Stephen W. Herbert & Company at (713) 664-1200 for more information.

What is Open Enrollment?

Every year at a designated time, Americans may enroll in the health insurance plan of their choosing. During this period, you may sign up for individual or family health insurance coverage and apply for government subsidies to offset the costs of insurance. The amount of the subsidies depends on your income. It’s the only time you can purchase a major medical plan unless you qualify for a special enrollment. Keep in mind, Medicaid and the Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIP) have open enrollment all year.

What is the Affordable Care Act (ObamaCare)?

In March 23rd, 2010, the Affordable Care Act or ObamaCare was signed into law. The law is intended to improve access, affordability, and quality in healthcare. It requires that all Americans have health insurance. Some things the act does include:

  • Eliminates Pre-existing Conditions as Reasons to Decline Coverage
  • Lets Young Adults Remain on Their Parents’ Plans until age 26
  • Improves Medicare Coverage & Expands Medicaid
  • Provides Affordable Health Insurance for Low-to-Middle Income Americans
